Topology Optimization Module

Design methodologies that fully utilize today’s manufacturing capabilities are yet few, as CAD environments are built on representative simplifications based on what was producible in the past. We do not necessarily need symmetric parts, a cyclic repetition of features or need to consider directionality. With some techniques, there are no constraints on what is producible, potentially allowing us to achieve outstanding performance, if we are able to leverage it in a design stage.
Design methodologies to allow us unconstrained part complexity are yet few. Topology Optimization (TO) with the Minimum Compliance method based on Simple Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) is the most commonly used. In this course, students will learn the basics of this approach and will set up a simple script based on Finite Element modelling based on this principle themselves. They will learn about the benefits and the shortcomings of this approach as well as about computer programs that have implemented this routine already. Students will also work hands-on, to convert their designs into physical products using 3D printing/ Additive Manufacturing.
